Indo-Zim project to benefit SME’s

Industry and Commerce Minister Welshman Ncube on Wednesday said small to medium scale enterprises (SMEs) are set to benefit from a $5 million Indo-Zimbabwe project.

The Ministry of Small to Medium Enterprises and Co-operative Development, on behalf of the government of India in 2006, signed for the development of SMEs in the country.

Speaking at the Information and Communication Technology seminar in Harare, Ncube said Technology access was the major challenge for most SME’s.

“Technology has changed a lot over the past decade and yet when we look at how SMEs use technology, there has been only a limited adoption of various new technologies,” said Ncube

The project has facilitated the establishment of Indo-Zimbabwe Technology Centre in Harare, India Technology Centre in Bulawayo, Small Enterprises Development Corporation centre in Chitungwiza and 14 other centres in different provinces.

He said the government was making strides to ensure that SMEs adopt the latest technologies in the country through various project initiatives

“Many industrial sectors are set to benefit from machinery from the Indo- Zimbabwe project, the plastic industry, mining, railways, heavy industries through spares and the local electronic industries through manufacturing of circuit boards,” said Ncube

Ncube said the project would also provide training for youth, aspiring SME’s and students from various technical institutions.

Others set to benefit include students at vocational training institutions specialising in printed circuit board manufacturing, tool design, computer aided design and manufacturing and quality control.

“The aim of this project is to empower SMEs and the industry as a whole through introduction of latest manufacturing technology,” said Ncube
